The Space Age dawned with the successful orbiting of the very first man-made satellite, the Soviet Union's Sputnik 1. About the size of a beachball with spring-loaded antennae, it contained a simple radio transponder that beeped incessantly- to western ears, ominously- as it basket-weaved it's orbits about the earth. It was the spur that launched the race between Cold-War superpowers, the U.S and CCCP, for dominance in space. — Brixton Doyle
